Description

Medium:

Went at this with HB graphite.

The Work:

Wanted to get some work in where the subject is torqued in a dynamic pose. Some foreshortening, lots of tricky angles, and have to reALly work out the proportions in your head.

Had to work out the head turned back slightly, the right arm bent at an acute angle, and the opposing upper and lower torsos.

Fun part for me, in the lighting, is trying to find the right values and trying to understand where the light is coming from, how it hits the various surfaces/planes of the body, and casts shadows around.

The Learning:

Picked up a self-published book on figure drawing last week by Marcelo Vignali.

He mentioned that every stretched line has an opposing pinched line, in organic subjects. At least in this subject, recognized the stretch in her abdomen and pinch by her hips on the opposing side.

He also likes to start with a big abstract shape, then define general shapes beneath that to chop the puzzle into more manageable 3D objects, then move in for the kill with the lighting and details.

My style is to go ALl in right away when I start, with general lines, but I might have to try his Fractal Method going from giant nebulous shape, to sub-shapes, to lines, to shadows.

ALways trying to stretch and grow, looking for more efficient ways to draw.

Let's get it!!!

Awesome. Love the shaded areas. It resembles the old masters studies.
