I was tagged for Tom's Burfday Contest a few weeks back, here:
Tom's Birthday Contest Alright So tomorrow starts the month of September for me and that means that that we are going to have my Birthday competition. Alright So let us go about the rules for my two competitions.
My first competition is simple it is a random give away.
If you are my Watcher and you want in you just have to comment here and say you want to be in the drawing and you have to make a journal telling people about it and tag me in it.
My second competition is a art competition. Any type of Art will do pictures, photos, any type of writing. The rule is that it needs to some how be based on one of my works, no specifications on exactly how. In the description you can tell how you connect it to the piece of art and you tag me and my work on it. Then you tag me in the description so I know you are entering I will pick the best one that in my opinion is the best. I will comment on eve
The gist was to run with one of Tom's work, and create some art based off of it.
There were a lot of stories that I wanted to tackle. A lot of them dealt with making tough choices, which makes for great stories.
Considering the time I had, and the impact of the piece, I chose this one:
LeftA girl stands in front of a door blocking a boy from leaving. “I am mad at you I do not think I can ever talk to you again.”
The boy shrugged grabbing his bag and rifle, “My dear I have left behind enough good people, and pretty girls in my short life I think I can live with one more.”
He pushes her out of the way and walks out of the door into the pouring rain. He walks towards the lightning. She never sees him again.
Few notes about it.
I love how simple the conflict and choices are, which lends to the reader being able to fill in so many of the blanks.
Originally, I was gonna see how literally I could adapt something from 'Left'. The ending seemed hard for me to reconcile, as I try to tell stories with a positive spin, which dynamically changes the essence of the story.
I had a hell of a time re-imagining the story, in an effort to prevent painting the guy as a complete asshole, or the girl as a neurotic psycho.
And as a lot of things are, the story seemed to gravitate towards misunderstanding, and the power struggles in politics, office or otherwise. What I took from it, at its core, is a confrontation, where two individuals aren't seeing eye to eye, due to withheld information.
The subject of power runs many levels deep, including, are we really choosing what we do, or are we really being manipulated.
Artistically, I tried to throw a lot of different colors in, but I seem to gravitate towards purple. It is a mixture of Red (Hot) and Blue (Cold), and it just goes well with skin tones and guns.
This is my first real foray into panel to panel work, so it was interesting trying to frame the composition. Trying to create different moods, angles, and offsets to make interesting continuity from panel to panel, and page to page.
I learned how hard it can be to meet deadlines, the end of this month in this case. I spent a lot of time on the story, and telling it through my eyes. The art kinda started flowing around last week, on and off. I wish I had more dedicated time to work on it. It's hard to get all the concepts discussed above into 4 pages, but fuck it.
I've been reading a lot, like Story (
www.amazon.com/Story-Structure…), by Robert McKee, and trying to digest all sorts of Youtube on screenwriting, directing, and general storytelling to add to my repertoire.
Hopefully I did "Left", justice.
Happy Burfday
